LATEST NEWSSUNDAY 26TH OCTOBER 20082008-10-29 It was an early start and Ponds Forge was very quiet compared to the usual volume of competitors that we normally are used to seeing at the higher profile competitions, nevertheless despite the lack of karate ka attending, there was a very high standard overall. Unfortunately there were some very different categories this time with regard how they had been split by grade and age. All of the kata categories were 15 years and Under and then this age group was given their appropriate grades. Therefore you could have a 7 year old competitor go against a 15 year old competitor in the same group. Obviously not an ideal situation to be in but to use it as good experience on the mats was probably the best way to look at it. Due to the way it had been set we had Eliza Jones,Charlotte Bowie and Natasha Nussbaum all in the same category of Girls 15 years and Under 3rd to 1st Kyu.Quite early on it appeared that the younger competitors were dominating this group and both Charlotte Bowie and Natasha Nussbaum went out very early on to these younger girls.Eliza Jones, who is only 9 years old, managed to make it through to the final and took the Silver amongst some very good , young kata competitors. Jaye Gearing also competed for us in Kata but in the Girls and Boys 15 years and Under 4th Kyu and below category where she made it through to the semi-final stages and won a Bronze. We encountered a varied mix of ages again in the Boys 3rd to 1st Kyu 15 years and Under group. We had Bleu Parris, Chris Kates and Nathan Taylor but despite their best efforts all went out first round in this tough category. In the Boys Dan Grade 15 years and Under category we had Alfie Wise and Nathan Jay. Alfie looked promising and managed to stay in for a couple of rounds but Nathan unfortunately came out in the first round. It seemed getting to the medal stages were impossible!! Chris Kates had a second chance of medaling in the Male Cadets 15-17years 3rd kyu and above category. He wasn't disappointed this time as he went through to the semi-final stages after some strong performances and scooped a Bronze. We then had Chris's older brother Michael Kates in the Senior Male 3rd Kyu and above category. Michael always performs to the best of his ability but on this occasion he came out in the early stages. Our final competitor in the individual kata categories was Sophie Wise. Sophie has only recently returned to competing after a long break but gave some strong performances in the Female Cadets 15-17 years category. She eventually got through to the final and won the Silver in this talented group. As the kata came to an end, the kumite categories commenced. The teams were first up and yet again the age groups had been divided up into rather unusual age groups again. 2 competitors had to be 10-13 years and the final competitor had to be 14-15 years. Normally teams are of the same age group but despite this new idea EKK decided to enter anyway. EKK had 3 squad members who fitted this age criteria and they were Alfie Wise, Cuba Parris and Idris Amin. This was Cuba's very first time fighting in this new age category as he has only just recently turned 10 years of age, so for him it was even more of a challenge. Alfie was first up to fight but despite a good effort his opponent managed to score 5-0 against, leaving the EKK team with their first fight down. Cuba was our second fighter to step up and he did an amazing job of getting back those all important points that the team needed by scoring 5-0 to match the opposing team, so now being neck and neck everything hung on Idris to get those crucial points to secure their position but it just wasn't meant to be after a lot of effort on his part. It was then on to the Individual Kumite events. The girls went up first. We had Eliza Jones in the 9 years and Under Girls Open Weight category and after a few tough rounds she battled her way to the final where she took the Silver. Jaye Gearing also fought but in the Girls 10-11 years Under 35kg category. She tried hard but came out first round. It was then on to the Boys 9 years and Under Open Weight category. We had Luka Malinic and Patrick Gallagher in this one. Both boys had to work hard in this category and unfortunately Patrick came out in the first round. Luka managed to scrape through to the final after a couple of close calls but went on to take the all important Gold. We also had Charlotte Bowie in the Girls 12-13 years Under 45kg. She looked sharp and had some tough fights and was severely winded at one point after a hard blow to her abdomen but still went on to take a well earned Bronze. In the Boys 12-13 years 50+ kg category we had Alfie Wise. Alfie was unlucky to be drawn against an opponent who looked twice his age and build and was incredibly strong. There was nothing Alfie could do apart from his best but today was not to be despite his opponent getting several warnings, he still won on points leaving Alfie with a first round exit.We also had Nathan Jay in the Boys 12-13 years -45 kg category. He tried hard but also came out first round. In the Boys 10-11 years-35kg category we had Cuba Parris and Andrew Jay. This again was Cuba's first time in this age group and he had no expectations at all. But he proved once again what a talented fighter he is and went all the way through to the final where he took a very well deserved Gold. Andrew Jay also competed in this category and after a promising first round ,he lost on the second round. We then had Bleu Parris in the Boys 10-11 years -40kg category. Bleu is also brand new to this group like his twin brother, and thought he would have his work cut out especially with the current British Champion in his category for this age group. However Bleu performed brilliantly and breezed through to the final where he took the Gold to match his twin brother`s. Our last fighter of the day was Idris Amin. He had a relatively small group in the 14-15years + 70 kg category. He fought well but it just wasn`t enough to reach the final but he did manage to get to the semi`s where he took a Bronze for his efforts. All in all it was a good day but there is always room for improvement. Sensei Enzo added “ All the squad did very well today and I am a very happy man but despite the acheivements today we must all remember that there is no room for complacency. Keep up the good work!” Out of 16 squad members we gained 3 Bronze, 3 Silver and 3 Golds. A huge well done to all our medalists and everyone who participated.
