ENZO'S BACKGROUND

Born in a remote part of southern Italy I was always intrigued by the eastern culture and their ways of living.

When the boom of Bruce Lee hit the media all young children, including myself, wanted to be a good at martial arts. Unfortunately I could only ever dream of this because the nearest dojo was miles away and was impossible to reach without transport.

In the mid-eighties I decided to leave Italy as it was very hard to find work in my native village. I wanted a change and England was always my favourite so I moved there.

Although my priority was to learn the language and find a job, it was always on my mind to locate a good school of martial arts. I visited quite a few but was not convinced until some of my friends mentioned there was a good, and well-respected karate club at the local leisure centre (then called Washinkai Karate do.)

It sounded promising so I gave it a go and loved it straight away; I guess the style suited me perfectly. Not every aspect of my training went smoothly but this gave me more strength of character to continue and go all the way.

I started to train with the chief instructor Chris Thompson to improve my knowledge and train harder. I gave everything I had because I always felt privileged and never took for granted that I was able to train karate in a dojo.

Not long after this I was picked to join the kata team, which was a great moment for me because I felt that all my hard work was starting to pay off. It also felt good because it was contrary to the discouragement I had faced earlier in my karate career.

The negative attitudes of others gave me more will to train because my ambition was to prove them wrong, which I certainly did. From willpower grows success.

I now run my own clubs very successfully. For more info about my their locations and training times please visit the club directory. To find about my credentials and successes please look at my competitions page. Other competition results are listed in the news index and archives as they happen.
