Sunday 22nd June 2008

2008-06-24
On Sunday 22nd June a few of the EKK squad attended this small but very hospitable and well organised competition. It was the first time that EKK had been to this event so no one was sure what to expect but we were all very pleasantly surprised.

This competition was an ideal introduction onto the karate competition circuit for a couple of our new competitors making their début appearances,we also had a handful of the A and B squad members as well.

This was a kata only event and with twelve EKK squad members in total competing it was a very relaxed and informal day, which makes a change from the pressure and hectic style of the higher profile competitions EKK normally attend.

The morning commenced with all of the kyu grades being split into groups and getting the opportunity to learn a new kata, as before the competition started the organisers hosted a kata course for all of the competitors. This was a unique idea and a positive one as it gave everyone the opportunity to warm up and maybe even learn something new! After approximately an hour of extra tuition, the competing got off to a brilliant start.

First up was the Teams category. EKK only had one team today, this is usually our all girls team of Summer Parris,Jaye Gearing and Eliza Jones. Unfortunately today Eliza was unable to attend at short notice so Cuba Parris stepped in as their replacement. Cuba never normally competes in kata as he is a kumite competitor but thought he would give it a go today after practising so hard in class with his katas. Cuba proved himself as a worthy team member and despite never having practised together before helped the girls immensely by working hard to keep up with their timing and giving some strong performances. They all worked hard and made it to the final to take the Gold. Well Done to all of you!

It was then on to the Individual performances. First up was our new squad member, Isobelle Lyne. Isobelle is a novice to competing and hasn't been an orange belt for very long but she has stood out in class as showing some precise techniques and good potential so Sensei Enzo entered her into the 9th Kyu 5-15 years category. Considering this was Isobelle`s first efforts at competing she appeared very composed and focused. She gave some lovely performances and reached the final where she earned the Gold medal.

Next up in the 6th Kyu 9-15 years category we had Jaye Gearing and Michael Perkins. Michael has been with EKK for a while now and has grown in confidence over the past few months in class with his katas. At eight years old he is showing a lot of promise at being a good kata competitor. He used nice techniques and fantastic power which took him all the way to the semi-final where he managed to win the Bronze and for his first competition that can't be bad.

Jaye Gearing was also in this group and she is showing just how consistent she is of late at winning those medals. She ended up in the final to take the Gold. Well done to you both!

We then had Nathan Taylor in the 6th Kyu 5-8 years category. Nathan is a more experienced squad member and is normally very successful in kata. But unfortunately today just wasn't meant to be as he forgot his kata halfway through and came out first round.

In the 4th and 5th Kyu 5-10 years category, we had Summer Parris and Chloe Pullin. This was also Chloe`s début appearance today and as a new squad member she showed tremendous effort and worked incredibly hard. She ended up in the final with Summer, which was a brilliant achievement for her first time competing and as Summer also forgot Koshkundai halfway through(must of been something in the water on Sunday!) she went on to win the Gold and Summer the Silver.

We then had Bleu Parris and Cuba Parris in the 3rd Kyu 5-9 years category. Cuba and Bleu are used to being in the same category for kumite together so obviously for kata it was the same again. Cuba hasn't competed in kata for a very long time but he showed real spirit and determination until he also forgot Koshkundai at the exact same place as Summer had previously! He still managed to achieve a Bronze medal though so he should feel very proud of himself. Bleu fortunately remembered his katas and was firing on all cylinders. He gave a fantastic performance of Nipaipo where he took the Gold in the final.

Chris Kates was up next in the 3rd Kyu 10-15 years category. Chris looked incredibly sharp and polished today and did a great Bassai Dai and Unshu. This took him all the way to the semi-final where he took a very well deserved Bronze.

Our final category of the day was the 1st Kyu to Dan Grades 5-15 years category. In this we had two competitors Nathan Jay and Alfie Wise. Both boys looked strong today and clearly their training has been making a real difference. Nathan performed well in this group and took the Bronze in the semi-final but Alfie had the edge and looked unstoppable as he breezed through to the final where he won the Gold.

Due to the fact of it being a kata only event EKK had a nice early finish and everyone commented on what a positive and well run event it had been.

Sensei Enzo said “ I have really enjoyed today. This is what makes events like these worthwhile causes. It was friendly, well organised and the judging was extremely fair and unbiased. Thank you to the organisers for inviting us and well done to all the squad here today, old and new,you showed great improvement and potential for the future. Keep up the good work!”

A big thank you to Mark Adams for hosting such a great competition,we all had a good day!

Also thanks to Tracy for taking the photographs for us and also to Howard and Michael for stepping in as coaches while Sensei Enzo had to referee on the areas.

See you at the next competition.

2008-06-16
This weekend saw the EKK squad travel to Weston-Super-Mare to compete in the 5th South West Open organised by Imperial Karate.

This is generally a very well attended competition due to the incentives on offer for medallists such as vouchers and quality trophies and this weekend was no exception.

There was an anticipated 500 competitors due to attend so the EKK Squad were prepared for some large categories and to have to go through quite a few rounds to even be in with a chance of obtaining a medal!!

Although this competition was busy, the high standards that the EKK Squad had come to expect over the previous ones attended was definitely lacking across the board this time but still every squad member gave 100% despite this.

As normal we got under way with the Kata. Teams were up first this time. The first team of the day Kyu Grade Any Age Team. We had Summer Parris, Eliza Jones and Jaye Gearing in this category. The girls have not been competing together as a team for very long but today they were exceptional. They were synchronised and showed great power and poise. This was clearly enough to impress the judges and got us off to a good start on the medal table with a well earned Gold. Well done girls!

In the Dan Grade Any Age Team category we had our well established boys team of Alfie Wise,Neil Irvine and Billy Montasser. Yet again the boys proved their worth and performed brilliantly together. They are such a polished and formidable team and again gained the Silver medal position, narrowly missing out on the Gold.

Up next was the Boys and Girls 3rd Kyu and Above Under 10 yr Individual category. We had Eliza Jones and Bleu Parris. Both of our EKK squad members performed well, their katas looked very sharp and clearly their training is paying off. Both of them only lost to the winner who performed Unshu. Eliza made it to the semi-final taking the Bronze and had Bleu not made a mistake in his kata in the final could have made it to the Gold medal position but with a split decision of 2-1 with the flags against he had to settle for the Silver on this occasion.

We then had the Girls 4th Kyu and Below Under 10 yr Individual category. Jaye Gearing was in this group for us. Jaye is a fairly new squad member for EKK especially with competitions. She showed great efforts with her katas after trying to remember everything Sensei Enzo had taught her. She gave it her all and ended up in the semi-final taking the Bronze medal. And she gained gold in the 9 yrs girls kumite, well done Jaye.

In the Boys 4th Kyu and Below 10 yr and Under Individual category we had Nathan Taylor. Nathan had performed brilliantly in all of his rounds and was certainly on target to take the Gold. But unfortunately in the semi-final Sensei Enzo made a costly mistake and Nathan repeated his kata which he had previously done in the last round, therefore as you have to alternate the katas in he was then disqualified from the round. Sensei Enzo apologised for his unintentional mistake but despite all this Nathan managed to take a respectable third place with Bronze.

In the Girls 4th Kyu and Below 10-15 yr Individual category we had Summer Parris. Summer who is only 10 clearly didn't believe she had much of a chance in this relatively large group especially with the vast age disadvantage! But she showed such poise and strength in all her performances that the judges could not fail to recognise this. Her efforts were tremendous and she reached the final to take a highly deserved Gold.

We then had the Boys 3rd Kyu and Above 10-15 yr Individual category. Alfie Wise and Nathan Jay were our competitors in this one and yet again it was a huge category! Alfie tried his best but could not get past the first round. Nathan however managed to stay in for a few rounds getting to the semi-final stages. He performed well and scooped a Bronze for his efforts.

Charlotte Bowie and Natasha Nussbaum were in the Girls 3rd Kyu and Above 10-15 yr Individual category. Unfortunately today was not the day for Natasha and she came out in the first round. Charlotte looked very precise today and seemed to improve with every round. She reached the final with ease and took with her a well earned Silver. These two girls also performed in the Open Pairs category. They haven't been practising for pairs for very long and today was the first time they got to try it out on the mats. Both showed good synchronisation and worked hard to reach the semi-final stages where they took a Bronze. Keep up the good work girls!

Our final kata category of the day was the Senior Male 3rd Kyu and Above. Our sole competitor was Michael Kates. He looked on form today and generated some amazing techniques and power. He breezed through to the semi-final stages but could not convince the judges to let him reach the final. Despite the decision he managed to gain third place position and received the Bronze.

After a very busy morning of Kata, the kumite categories started promptly. Our first kumite category of the afternoon was the Mixed 10 yr and Under Open Grade Teams. We entered two teams into this category this time. We had our usual team of Cuba Parris,Bleu Parris and Luka Malinic and for our second team it was their début appearance! Patrick Gallagher,Nathan Taylor and Shea Turner became our second team,it was also Shea's first ever competition! All three boys did amazingly well as a team for the first time together and are looking very promising for the future. They made it to the semi-final and took a well deserved Bronze. Cuba,Bleu and Luka once again showed true team dynamics and although they are not used to being in a category with different rules they shone through despite the lower levels of standards in fighting that they had to face on this occasion. They did a fantastic job as usual and once again reached the final to maintain the Gold medal position. A huge well done to both teams.

We then had a few individual categories running at the same time. There were five areas so obviously this is inevitable, the plus side to this means an earlier finish for all concerned so that can only be a good thing.

Andrew Jay was our only EKK squad member in the Boys 10-11 yr above 30kg Individual category. Andrew fought really well today and showed that he can hold his own in a large group. He battled through a few rounds and got to the final where he took the Silver medal.

Up next was the Boys 12-13 yr Above 45kg Individual category. Alfie Wise and Billy Montasser competed in this large group and they certainly had their work cut out for them. This was mainly due to the height and strength of their opponents but also some unclear decisions on how much contact should be allowed. Billy unfortunately struggled in his first round with a much stronger opponent and could not get past this stage. Alfie managed to get through a few more rounds to the semi-final but not without having to fight extremely hard and take a few punches along the way. He persevered and earned himself the Bronze.

Nathan Jay was also fighting today. After his success in Kata he was hoping his winning streak would continue in the Boys 12-13 yr Under 45kg Individual category. He wasn't disappointed as he went on to take another Bronze in this kumite category. Neil Irvine was also in this category and showed he was on top form today as well. He looked strong and fought hard despite the fact that a lot of his perfect techniques were not being scored in yet another difficult category. He came out with his head held high to get a joint third place alongside Nathan.

In the Girls 12-13 yr Individual Kumite category we had Charlotte Bowie. She had a very small group of just three competitors,so she knew that at least she would win a medal! She fought well and managed to get the Bronze this time.

We then had two brothers on two different mats at the same time! Idris Amin was in the Boys 14-15 yr 57kg and Above and Usame Amin was in the Cadet Male 16-20 yr category. Both brothers tried really hard and fought to the best of their ability but it just wasn't enough this time and both lost in the first round.

In the Boys 7-9 yr Individual category we had five competitors. This category was huge and there were approx. 36 boys waiting to fight. Our EKK squad members were Cuba Parris,Bleu Parris,Luka Malinic,Patrick Gallagher and Shea Turner. This was a very difficult category in the respect that the standard was poor overall and for our more experienced fighters it proved no match for their abilities-quite often they were dropping a level to even score a point! Yet again there were issues surrounding the level of contact on the mats and plenty of diving and play acting was in force as well as improper conduct, which was a shame for the EKK squad who lead the way when taking their kumite seriously. Shea Turner who was making his début here did remarkably well for his first time competing. Although he lost in the first round we are sure with more training he will shape up to be a good kumite competitor in the future. Patrick Gallagher who is slightly more experienced in competing managed three rounds but despite his efforts could not progress further in this large group. It was down to Luka,Cuba and Bleu to try to get to those medal positions and this was no easy task as everything seemed stacked against them at one point! Bleu Parris gave some commendable performances despite harbouring a heel injury for the past five days, showing he is the star that he has proved to be. Cuba also tried to give some good fights but unfortunately for the twins no one of any calibre tested their true potential today and for Cuba especially boredom had already set in but given the circumstances he fought on with good grace and composure. Luka also gave some great fights and has showed much improvement recently in his level of fighting. Again though due to the lack of competition his skills could not be shown off on this occasion. He got to the semi-final stages only losing out to his fellow team members, Cuba and Bleu, where he won the Bronze. As usual Cuba and Bleu met in the all EKK final and proved once again they are at the top of their 9 yr and under category at the moment. This time Cuba took the Gold and Bleu the Silver.

Our final category of the day was the 10-12 yr Boys Team. Our team consisted of Alfie Wise, Neil Irvine and Nathan Jay and Billy Montasser as their reserve. This kumite category was also fraught with difficulties and the boys encountered some near impossible scoring and incorrect decisions. Alfie gave some good fights and proved he is a worthy team member working hard at every turn. Neil also showed some fearless fights and brilliant techniques as did Nathan but all their efforts and endurance nearly vanished during the final. Alfie managed to draw with his opponent but Neil was less fortunate as his opponent seemed intent on causing him as much damage as possible. He landed a very heavy blow to Neil's face which was excessive contact and after being checked by the first aiders they said he was not allowed to continue in the fight as his jaw appeared badly hurt. Unfortunately the judges made the strange decision of disqualifying Neil and awarding the fight to his aggressive opponent despite what the WKF rules state. All hopes were on Nathan and he did his job well with a large points margin enabling the boys to take the Silver.

Despite the odd decisions and rules on the kumite categories, EKK had a very productive day.

Sensei Enzo added; “ I am very pleased with the results today especially as we faced a lot of adversity but we all rose above it and came through with the dignity and professionalism that EKK is renowned for. We proved today that it isn't about how many medals you win but the star quality and etiquette that all of my squad have as individuals and as teams. Your conduct today was superb and I would like to thank everyone on their success and dedication.”

Thanks goes to Howard and Michael for helping coach today and also to Usame for preparing and warming up the younger kumite competitors.

Also, as always, to Neil for the photography.

GRADING SUNDAY 8TH JUNE 2008

2008-06-09
EKK had another successful grading this weekend, many students attended all hoping to acquire their next Kyu grade.

We would like to thank the students who graded and showed our panel just how determined and hard working they were, even though at times the anxiety showed through they persevered and all of them should be very proud of their efforts at this grading.

We would like to thank the instructors who helped put the students at ease and helped them with all their necessary grading requirements from the syllabus.

A big thank you goes to Howard, Paolo, Matt, Dan and Sophie for all their hard work with the students and also to Paul for assisting them with their duties.

Another big thank you goes to Andrew and Michael for helping Sensei Enzo on the grading panel, their input and expertise were vital in order to assist with the fair and smooth running of the examination.

Another thank you goes to the girls who ran our refreshments table, they all did a fantastic job with raising money for our squad fund. Thanks to Julia, Ellie and Summer. And lastly we would like to thank our great team of administrators and organisers who did a fantastic job of dealing with the registration, licenses and general running of the day. Thanks once again to Lin, Mel, Sue and Louise for all their help.

Once again a huge thank you to everyone involved, we look forward to the next one!
